My husband and I were getting ready for our September 2013 trip to Australia and New Zealand when my brother mentioned that we should get a GoPro. Up until that point, I hadn’t really heard much about the camera so we decided to do a bit of research and in the end bought a GoPro Hero3 camera. And boy are we glad that we did. We were able to capture so many memorable moments on the GoPro that we couldn’t have captured with a regular camera. For example, we took some great videos of us snorkeling at the Great Barrier reef, hiking on the Fox Glacier in the pouring rain, time-lapsed videos of Sydney harbor and sunset over Uluru, and many more. I am SO thankful that my brother mentioned this camera to us and I wanted to share our positive experience with you.

10 Reasons Why I Love & Why You Should Buy A GoPro Camera

1) Versatile – there are so many mounting options for this little camera. On our trip, we used the head strap so my hubby could wear it easily on our helicopter flight over the Great Barrier Reef and when hydro-Zorbing down the hill in New Zealand. We used the tripod mount when doing time lapse shots of Uluru’s sunset. And a gorilla pod was the perfect way to mount the GoPro to a tree or post to capture a shot of us. Sure my husband looked a bit dorky with the camera mounted to his head, but hey, after you see the videos, you’ll get over the dork-factor.

2) Affordable – At $300 to $400, the GoPro is affordable compared to other cameras that have similar features. For example, you can get an entire GoPro camera for the same price you’d pay for quality waterproof housing for a nice Cannon EOS or Nikon digital camera.

3) Lightweight/Portable – after traveling the world with my husband that totes around an entire carry-on bag filled with camera equipment, it was really nice to have something that fit in the palm of my hand to contend with as it tips the scales at just 2.2 ounces.

4) Waterproof – the GoPro Hero3+ Silver is waterproof to 131 feet or 40 meters. We had no problem taking our camera underwater to capture amazing fish and coral videos. In fact, I think our best video is of a green sea turtle swimming around us and eating sea grass. All of the other snorkelers on our boat were jealous. Some even had waterproof bags that went over their point and click cameras, but they were complaining about how hard it was to actually click the buttons and control the camera inside the bag under water. We had purchased one of those bags ourselves originally, but returned it once we got the GoPro. Sounds like we made the right choice.

5) Wide-Angle – we were quite happy with the wide angle shots that we got of the mountains and lakes around New Zealand during our trip, but this Hero3+ camera has an ultra wide lens that boasts increased image sharpness with reduced fish-eye distortion. You can get even clearer, crisper video and still shots than we did.

6) Time Lapse – the time lapse mode lets you capture a series of photos at 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 30 or 60 second intervals. For his very first video using GoPro, my husband did an amazing time lapse video of the Sydney Harbour where he set the camera up on a tripod, captured an image every 10 seconds for 30 mintues and then used the software to make a 25 second video using the shots at 25 frames per second. See the second video shown below.

7) Virtually Indestructible – Whether you are into extreme sports or you are just a bit rough on your electronics, the GoPro has a durable case that will withstand drops to the pavement, water to a depth of nearly 130 feet, and birds that decide to pick it up and carry it away just for fun.

8) Video Quality – you really can get professional quality videos using the GoPro camera with resolution up to 1080p60. I used the editor from GoPro and was able to merge together various snippets of video AND they have some templates to use that will assist you in putting your videos together (with music too). We got some great videos and just check out some of the amazing ones other people made below…

9) Still Shots – you can take 10 MP photos at up to 10 frames a second. Yes – the still shots still have some fish-eye distortion, but few cameras can be used to capture such amazing underwater photos like we got of the fish and coral on the Great Barrier Reef. We also tried to pull still shots from our high resolution videos. They were OK, but you need to keep in mind that they won’t be as high resolution as actual still shots with the camera.

10) Super Fun – there are so many fun ways to use this camera to make videos from all kinds of perspectives. Strap it to your dog, to your child, to the end of your trombone, to a model rocket….the possibilities are endless which means the fun is endless!

Here are 5 creative ways people have used the GoPro to make fun videos…

What an excellent camera. I am from the old school with the big camera on the shoulder (but steady) and have always disliked the newer smaller camera's. Great little group of videos by the way. Try kayaking while in Australia and New Zealand. It's a blast. Cheers

I'm already a big fan of GoPro even though I don't have one yet. This lens though, puts things in a wonderful perspective: That of the everyday casual user. Great Lens, thanks for sharing!

I saw a GoPro on display with the Jeb Corliss flying suit YouTube video playing on a big HDTV behind it the last time I was at Costco. It made me want to buy one and go on an adventure. Thanks for the review!

The guy behind the GoPro company is an alumni of the school I went to (he was featured in an alumni magazine this year). Apparently he was an art major, and after traveling and surfing abroad, he decided to start this company. It's cool to learn that there are real live people behind these products, and his "rags to riches" story is quite inspirational!

I bought one recently and I'm loving it. I found a place online that is giving you a bonus of a extra battery and charging kit, 16GB Micro SD card and a handle for shooting. Killer deal... especially in time for Xmas.

I have been meaning to create pretty much this same Lens for a while now! I have a GoPro Hero3 Black edition and use it to capture footage from my motorcycling, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking and even archery. In fact, one of my Lenses features plenty of video footage that my GoPro took from my helmet whilst on a road trip. I love the camera, it creates awesome quality footage and there are so many options that you can do with it. the only downside is that the camera comes with few mounts and all the accessories are quite expensive once you keep adding to the collection. Which most people do, you just keep wanting more!

I've been meaning to buy one of these travel cameras so I can document my travels - maybe this will be that time. I miss so much during my trip because I am looking through the lens - having the wider angled shots will bring the whole trip back as a package. Thanks. Also with this camera maybe I'll get a few photos of me in the frame as well :)
